Mumbai, July 10 By Our Bollywood Reporter   Ms Divya Chawla The ‘crossover’ Monsoon Wedding has more in common with spunky item numbers like Salame from Dhoom and the Sushmita Sen-starrer Shakalaka Baby than you think. The voice behind these, singer-actor Vasundhara Das is confident of juggling both vocations equally well, and also sees herself shaking a leg to some of these numbers on the big screen.

And though she has been associated with serious cinema from her first appearance in Kamal Hassan’s film Hey Ram in 1999, Das insists it wasn’t a conscious decision to opt for offbeat movies.
‘‘There has to be a little intensity in the role,’’ she explains, adding that she has been, ‘‘dancing and singing around trees in South Indian movies.’’ And though she has been out of sight for Hindi film viewers since Monsoon Wedding was released in 2000, she has been ruling the airwaves with hits like Rabba Rabba and Aaja Gufaon Main from Aks, Chale Jaise Hawaien from Main Hoon Na and O Ri Chhori from Lagaan. But all that’s about to change with Das reappearing on the big screen. First up is Tanuja Chandra’s Filmstar, where she plays a convict accused of murdering her husband. In Pankaj Prakash’s Patthar Bezubaan, based on the Mathura rape case, Das is a police officer. She is also playing an expectant mother in Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana and an income tax official in Eik Dastak.

We have to persuade them to at least hear us out,’’ she adds. Truly a case of having to sing for one’s supper!
