Kapan; former names include Ghapan, Ghap’an, Kafin, Kafan, Katan, Qafan, Zangezur, and Madan) is the capital of the Syunik province of Armenia. The city is located 316 kilometers from Yerevan

Kapan ist die Hauptstadt der armenischen Provinz Sjunik und liegt im Südosten des Landes. Zu Sowjetzeiten hieß die Stadt Ghapan bzw. Kafan (armenisch Ղափան bzw. Կաֆան). Kapan liegt im Südosten des Landes an der Grenze zu Aserbaidschan beziehungsweise zu Bergkarabach auf einer Höhe von 800 m über dem Meeresspiegel und ist mit rund 30.000 Einwohnern die achtgrößte Stadt Armeniens. Der Name stammt von dem persischen Wort Madan, was Mine bedeutet. Noch heute ist die Stadt ein Bergbaustandort. Sie leidet unter den Folgen des Zusammenbruchs der Wirtschaft nach der Unabhängigkeit Armeniens von der Sowjetunion und dem Krieg um Bergkarabach 1992-1994. Seit 1994 herrscht ein Waffenstillstand, aber die Grenzen zu Aserbaidschan und der Türkei sind nach wie vor geschlossen.
